At the Ross on Wye Horizon Centre, we feel passionate about improving community-based services for adults with learning and other disabilities. We think that it is important to provide a supportive environment to build confidence, learn new skills, and develop independence while being in the heart of the local community – integration is key!
The Ross on Wye Horizon Centre CIC is a social enterprise, trading for social purpose and local community benefit. We are a Community Interest Company or CIC, introduced in the UK under the Companies Act 2004 designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good. These social enterprises have primary social objectives whose surpluses are reinvested for that purpose in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit. CICs work for the public good and have a valuable role to play in helping create a strong, sustainable and socially inclusive economy.
For the Horizon Centre, this means that we are dedicated to improving opportunities for adults with learning and other disabilities in the Ross on Wye and surrounding areas. Our vision – ‘local services bringing communities together’ – also commits us to working for the benefit of the wider community, including the input and involvement of local residents.
The Horizon Centre offers activities such as arts and crafts, woodwork, gardening, music and exercise groups as well as new opportunities. We believe that ‘our smallness is our strength’, as it allows us to be flexible, adaptable and able to view tried and tested approaches in different ways. Ross on Wye is a special place and the support for the centre has been very positive. The Horizon Centre hopes to become a ‘community hub’, offering courses, events and other opportunities for residents. Although based in Ross, we offer our service to people in the wider community as well as to those living in surrounding counties.
